Overview
Summexa is a Chrome extension that adds a small button next to the video player on YouTube watch pages. Clicking it opens a sidebar with a written summary of the video you are watching, generated automatically from its spoken content.
Summexa only activates on individual video pages (youtube.com/watch?v=...). It stays out of the way everywhere else on YouTube.
Installing Summexa
Summexa is available directly from the Chrome Web Store:
Click Add to Chrome, confirm the install, then open any YouTube video to see the Summexa button appear next to the player.
Using Summexa
- Open any YouTube video
- Click the Summexa icon that appears beside the player
- Wait a few seconds while the transcript and summary are generated
- Read the summary in the sidebar, or close it with the X button
Switching to a different video automatically resets the sidebar so it always reflects the video you are currently watching.
How Summaries Are Generated
When you click the Summexa button, this happens behind the scenes:
- The extension sends the video ID to our backend
- The backend first tries to fetch an existing transcript
- If none is available, audio transcription is used as a fallback instead
- The transcript is sent to an AI model, which writes a clear, structured summary
- The summary is returned to the sidebar and displayed
Most videos with existing captions return a summary within a few seconds. Videos that need the transcription fallback take longer, since the audio has to be processed first.
Understanding the Queue
The transcription fallback runs on a limited number of workers at once, to keep results reliable during busy periods. If your video needs this fallback and the workers are currently busy, the sidebar shows your position in the queue and updates it automatically until your turn arrives.
You do not need to keep the sidebar open while waiting. If you close it and reopen it on the same video, Summexa picks up wherever the request had gotten to.
